The Northern Territory (NT) is Australian territory bordering with Queensland to the east, South Australia to the south and Western Australia to the west. NT covers 1,349,129 km2 and its population is only 230,000. To put that in a better perspective, Italy would fit into NT about 4.5 times.
The first people in the area appeared about 40,000 years, Aboriginal tribes. European settlements started 1869 at Port Darwin. Darwin is the capital city, other regional towns being Alice Springs, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, and Tennant Creek. People in NT live in towns and settlements spread along the Stuart Highway and not along the coast as is the case in all other states in Australia.
Tourism is the second largest economy in NT, Ayers Rock and Kakadu National Park are the most visited tourist destinations in Northern Territory. The northern part of NT has a tropical climate and the central region is semi-arid desert land.
